The NFL is a pressure cooker. Despite loosing the turn-over battle, lack of pass-rush, and a secondary still giving up a ton of yards (going for an NFL record in yards allowed in one season) the Redskins find a way to win. Only great teams find a way to win despite short-comings. I am jealous I was not at Fedex to feel the energy of that crowd, but like many fans, I was standing, cheering and rejoicing right there in my living room.
So, how did the Redskins pull it off?
Decent tackling, especially from the secondary! We missed a couple tackles on Bradshaw but the defense never allowed any crazy yards after contact/catch. Jordan Pugh was a surprise and always seemed to be flying around the ball.
Controlled the tempo! Using a seemingly endless rotation of play-calling, by both the offense and the defense, the Redskins owned the clock and controlled the tempo of the game.
Bend, but never brake defense! Our secondary was soft at times, allowing big yards against the TE position and across the middle, yet, it never gave up the big play...and held to Giants (who are pretty good within 40yds of the endzone) to field goals, only allowing 1 TD pass.
Less mistakes, more luck! The Redskins didn't make many mistakes...few off-target passes/drops...one fumble for a loss (which ended up serving as motivation for Morris, more than anything)...all in all, we protected the ball and limited mistakes. It is not often a QB fumbles into a positive touchdown for his team, but RG3 and Joshua Morgan never gave up on the play...sprinkle in some good luck (or as Morgan would say, an accurate chest-pass) and they got a TD (Morgan's 1st TD of the season).
On a side note, those Refs last night needed a rude awakening. They called several "ghost" penalties, including the offensive pass interference on Paulsen, while not calling at least 12 holding calls against the Giants O-line. Sad that opposing teams can just game plan on holding the hell out of our guys and get away with it. I know one Ref got hurt, but from what I understand, there should be 1 back-up Ref...if not, there should be. No reason for a hurt Ref to take away from the quality of the game.
On to the Ravens with a BOAT LOAD of momentum and confidence.
Hail to the Redskins!
