Despite deliberations, the Redskins has been unable to strike a long-term deal with Brian Orakpo. With the Franchise Tag deadline closing in, the Washington Redskins applied the Franchise Tag to star OLB Brian Orakpo. Several close to the situation claim they two parties could not come to terms because the asking price from Orakpo is several million above what the Redskins are willing to pay. Orakpo could be looking for upwards of $15 million a year. Under the Franchise Tag, Orakpo would be earning $11.455 million for the 2014 season. Orakpo could appeal, though, stating he plays more snaps at DE, which would boost his pay up to $13.12 million for 2014.
The situation seems to be getting worse. Ian Rapoport reported that Brian Orakp has no plans on signing his tender. Unless the two sides can come to terms on a long term deal, the Redskins may be without their star OLB.
Any holdout comes the chance and speculation a trade. Could the Redskins trade Orakpo? This is a very interesting option, in my opinion. Orakpo wants a long term deal and any team willing to talk trade would have to be willing to meet his salary expectations, but for the Redskins, it may just be a way to sneak back into the late first round, or at least acquire draft picks or players, as the new head coach has many positions to upgrade.
I am sure, the situation will dominate the news in Washington until resolved.
Fans View: I would love to see the Redskins come to terms with Brian Orakpo for a 4 or 5 year deal. With that said, I hate it when good players take advantage of their situation...at the same time, at 27 years old, now is his probably last chance to cash in on his talent with a big contract. I am honestly torn. Some fans will not like Orakpo after this, regardless of the outcome of the situation. Of course, a strong season would warm them back up, unless it is with another team.
