This years draft has many interesting prospects. Since the Redskins do not have a first round pick this draft, highly sought-after prospects, like Sammy Watkins and Kelvin Benjamin, will be long gone by the time the Redskins pick at #34, a pick they are likely to use on a replacement for London Fletcher at MLB. The Free Agent market will be flooded with unemployed veterans at wide receiver, as well, so there may be more value in just signing a few WRs for competition and using the draft picks to fill the many other needs we have.
Here are some guys who should be available in the later rounds or as an undrafted free agent (UFA) that could be on the Redskins radar:
Brandon Coleman - 6'6" 225lbs Rutgers Coach Gruden loves big receiving targets in his offense, something the Redskins do not currently have on their roster, and Coleman is that is much more. Tall, tons of range, big play capability, good run blocking skills, and team captain, Coleman would be able to contribute right away. Coleman decided only to do the bench at the Combine, but logged am impressive 21 reps. Coleman does not have blazing speed, great hands, or perfect route-running ability, but averaged a TD for every 5 catches in College and knows how to score. Depending on his Pro-Day workouts, Coleman should jump off the board around the 3rd or 4th round...if the Redskins were to use ANY draft pick on a WR, this is the guy to pick.
Jeff Janis - 6'3" 219lbs Saginaw Valley State Janis is another big target. He participated well in the bench (20 reps) and 3-cone-drill (6.64 secs) at the Combine. For a big WR, Janis has some speed and acceleration. Janis is known to be a passionate, hard worker with great character...just the kind of guy you want on your football team. His major draw-back is that he has never really faced strong competition and did not absolutely dominate at the Division II level. If Janis is still on the board in the 5th round and the Redskins missed out on Coleman, Janis would be my pick.
Josh Brown - 5'10" 179lbs Pittsburgh St (KS) The Redskins desperately need a return guy on Special Teams and a speedy WR with big play skills on Offense, and Brown might be the answer. Brown has proved to be a solid slot receiver and valuable return man in College. He posted a 4.34secs time in the 40yd dash at the combine. This Division II prospect won many accolades for his return skills while setting school records in receptions, yards and touchdowns receiving. Despite his accomplishments, he is likely to still be available on day 2 of the NFL Draft and maybe even as a UFA. Brown is a hard worker, man of character, and a natural team leader...just the kind of guy the Redskins are looking for.
Damian Copeland - 5'11" 184lbs Louisville Copeland has been the leading receiver for Louisville the past 2 seasons despite being an average athlete. At Louisville, he showed great range catching the bad and an attitude when it is in his hands. He excels in the short passing game, especially in screens and slants. He could translate into a good slot receiver and a decent replacement for Santana Moss. Copeland should be a second day pick or UFA with a big upside.
