The Washington Redskins front office and new coaching staff will
be harshly tested right away, having many positions in need of upgrade and few
draft picks to work with. Some needs will be filled via free agency, but this
years draft choices will likely define the success the Redskins have in the
2014 season.
For Mock Draft 1.0, it will be assumed they Redskins do not trade up, back or acquire additional picks. It will be assumed that they do not trade Kirk Cousins and Re-Sign Orakpo.
With that said...let 2014Washington Redskins Mock Draft
1.0 begin...
With the 34th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, The Washington Redskins select....
Yawin Smallwood - ILB Conneticut
This may seem early for Smallwood to go off the board, but I expect a run on them towards the later half of the first round (due to other teams needs at that position). The Redskins need to fill the giant void in their defense left by the retirement of London Fletcher. Smallwood should be the best ILB on the board in round 2. Smallwood, at 6'2" 246lbs, he has great size and range, plays smart on his feet, good coverage skills, decent play against the run, and sheds blocks well. He is arguably the most well rounded LB in the draft. Despite coming out a year early for the draft, Smallwood was a productive team leader and 3 year starter in college and should have success in the pros.
With the 66th pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, the Washington Redskins select...
Antonio Richardson, OT Texas
I really had a tough time choosing between Richardson and Moses, but I know that Gruden is looking for more of a mauler, and at 6'6" 336lbs, "Tiny" Richardson is just that and then some. He faced some of the best pass rushers in college football and held his own, including shutting down Jadeveon Clowney. He would make a solid RT in the pros, just what the Redskins are looking for.
With the 98th pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, the Washington Redskins select...
Keith McGill, CB Utah
There is no doubt the Redskins secondary needs some help. Coach Gruden, like most NFL head coaches, are searching for the next Richard Sherman style DB who can cover TE's as well as larger WR's. McGill is 6'3" 211lbs and ran a 4.51 40 with many similarities to Richard Sherman. He had some issues at the Senior Bowl with cramps, causing some slide in his draft stock...just the slide that may leave him on the board for the Redskins to take. He would add much needed size and coverage skills to the Redskins struggling secondary.
With the 130th pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, the Washington Redskins select...
Brandon Coleman, WR Rutgers
Head Coach Jay Gruden loves big receiving targets in his offense, something the Redskins do not currently have on the roster. Coleman is a HUGE target, at 6'6" 225lbs. He performed admirably at the NFL Draft Combine, logging a 4.56 40 time and 21 reps in bench. This guy jumps out on film, scoring a TD on 1 out of every 5 receptions. Coleman has some fine tuning to do with route running but is still a match-up nightmare for opposing defenses, which is exactly what Coach Gruden is looking for.
With the 162nd pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, the Washington Redskins select...
Brandon Thomas, OG Clemson
The Redskins post Shanahan era zone-blocking scheme left them with an undersized, aging, and under-performing offensive line, with the exception of Trent Williams. The interior of that line needs in infusion of size and power...Thomas can add that and more. Thomas is 6'3" 317lbs with strong, long arms and big hands. Thomas has never been a very aggressive blocker (or mauler), but has proved to be capable and coachable...about all you can ask for a later round guard in the draft.
With the 194th pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, the Washington Redskins select...
Joe Don Duncan - TE Dixie State
With the suspension of Fred Davis and the instability of the health of Jordan Reed, the Redskins need another pass-catching tight end that is strong enough to serve in other roles, like special teams and in run-blocking formations...a jack of all traits kind of player....Duncan is just that. At 6'3" 268lbs,Duncan has good hands,
great instincts in reading defenses, and has a high football IQ. Duncan is a gym rat with
amazing strength and physique. His ability to be a back-up long-snapper and and
kicker makes him even more valuable in already tight NFL rosters. The Redskins
would be smart to pick this kid up late...the only reason he is not a 2nd or
3rd round pick is his lack of experience versus elite competition.
And that completes the 2014 Washington Redskins Mock Draft 1.0!!!
There are still many needs the Redskins will need to address (like SS/FS, another DB, WR, OL, DT) after the draft. I would expect the Redskins to be a favorite landing spot for many highly regarded undrafted free agents looking to break into an NFL roster. Who knows, maybe Mock 2.0 will have a list of those as well.
