I think most Redskins fans were pleased with the results of the first preseason game versus the Titans...Rambo got his "welcome to the NFL" and Phillip Thomas ended up finished for the year, but besides that, the team got some good work in and look pretty good.
So, what should we watch for against the Steelers?
1st Team Offense: We may gett a much more thorough look at the majority of the offensive starters. Not sure if Morris will play and Griffin is out, but the rest of the potential starting line-up should be in place. Watch the RT Polumbus...he is fighting to keep his job, but has had a decent camp. Helu and Cousins shined in the first game...look for both to try to establish consistency. Garcon may play a few snaps, but regardless, watch all the WR behind him with the starting offense...one fierce battle there.
1st Team Defense: Our defense held up pretty well, despite giving up two big runs. The pass rush needs to show consistency, so lets hope for 2+ sacks from the first half. Look for Rambo and Orakpo to make better reads against the run, and they will have their hands full with the Steelers Bell (who is been "WOW'ing" at camp). Watch our coverage on opposing TE's. Also, check out the DB rotation. Chances are several guys will get reps with the first team defense. Though Shannahan never gives up too much in Pre-Season, look for the different defensive packages Haslett uses.
Big Plays: For backups looking to earn a starting role or those on the roster bubble looking to earn a spot on the 53 man squad, it will only come through making big plays in this Pre-Season. So, pay attention to who makes the plays and stands out....chances are they will be the ones you end up seeing during the regular season.
Special Teams: This is one of the places a player could earn a roster spot. The team is still searching for a replacement for Alexander and has a new Special Teams coach. So far, so good, though. Former Redskins ST Coach Danny Smith will be coaching the Steelers ST unit, which has been pretty bad so far this year...let's all hope they do not improve this week.
Injuries: We are already thing at ILB and at Safety...neither position can afford another injury. Let's hope that the injury bug steers clear against the Steelers.
Hail to the Redskins!
